Simple Homemade Custard

Who needs store bought when you can make your own silky, smooth custard. I know the recipe seems simple enough but sometimes even simple recipes can turn into a disaster. When making custard you have to spare a few minutes to give it your full attention. You certainly don’t want a lumpy custard nor do you want brown burnt bits floating in your custard. Another plus to making this Simple Homemade Custard is that you know exactly what goes into it. No funny stuff and the ingredients are so simple, you almost always have them at hand.  The cream can easily be replaced with another cup of milk. I added it to give the custard that extra rich flavor. But it’s not totally necessary.

Ingredients for Simple Homemade Custard

Eggs, Vanilla Essence or Vanilla Pod, Fresh Cream, Milk, Cornflour and Sugar As I mentioned the cream is not absolutely necessary but it does make it a little more extravagant.

Serving the Custard

Although I could just eat a bowl of custard all on it’s own. There are really so many ways to use custard. Pour it on puddings, cakes, great for trifles or just pour it over some fruit.  It can be made thick or thin in terms of consistency. It all depends on how you want to use it.

There are debates as to whether you should use cornflour or not. If I want a thicker custard I definitely add cornflour. Of course, if you want a pouring consistency then you can leave out the cornflour. The fancy name for the one without the cornflour is actually called a Creme Anglaise. And for that version you may not need as much liquid as I’ve suggested in my recipe. Vanilla Pod is the preferred choice for this recipe. It just gives it that amazing vanilla flavor. However, there are days when I don’t have any vanilla pod then that would call for some vanilla essence or vanilla extract. It still tastes delicious but of course the seeds from the vanilla pod takes it to a whole new level. But trust me the kids are not going to complain if you don’t use a vanilla pod.  They will be only too happy to eat this bowl of comfort, vanilla pod or not.

I love having this Custard with some of my Eggless Fruit Cake or Chocolate Sheet Cake. If you loved this, please share!
